New Covenant International University & Theological Seminary

(Page 1 of the institution's application form)

This is a legal religious educational institution in the state of Florida in the USA. The Florida Statutes 1005.6 (f) states that, "A religious college may operate without governmental oversight".

That means you can start up an university to teach black magic in Florida as long as the rules in Statutes 1005.6 is followed. You can give out Ph.D in Voodoo or Ph.D in Bomoh, if you like. Though being legally instituted by the state of Florida, that alone does not guarantee the recognition of the institution's degrees in other states of the USA and other countries. Such recognition comes through 'accreditation'. That means the master's degrees and doctorates provided by institutions which are accredited and those which are not are qualitatively different.

The accreditation body that guarantees the quality of higher education in Florida is the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Theological seminaries and Christian universities like Asbury Theological Seminary and Baylor University are accredited by the body. And New Covenant International University & Theological Seminary is not in the accreditation list.

Simply said, those without accreditation is free to grant degrees without ensuring academic competency and so the certificates are not recognized. The implication is that those people who got their degrees and doctorates from unaccredited institutions cannot use the title "Dr." in their referent, or even if they use it, it is a fake "Dr.", like calling a woman without a child under her care as "mother".

Now you may be wondering why am I highlighting the New Covenant International University & Theological Seminary. That is because the institution's president Kevin Dyson was here earlier this year giving a series of talks on relationship at City Harvest Church. And lo and behold, our local charismatic Kong Hee's Master of Divinity (M.Div) and Doctor of Theology (D.Th) are from Dyson's institution. If he really wants a good quality theological education degree, he can get them from local seminaries and theological colleges. There are plenty which are accredited here. Don't have to get from a dubious institution in Florida. But if he prefer overseas degrees, he should opt for places like Asbury or Baylor.

1989 was also the year he started City Harvest Church. So he was basically getting his basic theological degree and doctorate at the same time as he was building his church.

You TTC folks have it too easy. ;)

Or have it too hard? We need 3 years to get a M.Div or B.Div. Then another 2 years or more for M.Th. Then another 4 years or more for D.Th.

Kong Hee is a remarkable man. Can start a mega-church and do his degrees and doctorates all in 4 years! Have to give it to him. The only person that I can think of who can get a doctorate that fast is Wittgenstein. But his was from Cambridge and not New Covenant International University. I'm interested to read Kong Hee's thesis (if it ever get published).\

:)

Haha, that would explain the way CHC is now.. strong in ministry but weak in theology..

Hmm I'm actually contemplating going to seminary myself, but still weighing my options. Would love to hear more about your experiences at TTC ;-)

Are you planning on becoming a pastor?

Sze Zeng said...

Hi Terrence,

Thank you for your comment and question. Personally I think CHC is neither strong in theology nor "ministry" in a nuanced sense of the word.

Am I to be a pastor? That depends on the definition of "pastor". If it means to be like Kong Hee, then that's not what I want to be.

Pastors like Rowan Williams, Karl Barth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, or the fictional Gustav Briegleb in the movie Changeling are more deservedly categorized as "pastor".

DO megachurch pastors like Kong Hee plagiarize others work? Check out this website.. http://cheatgrace.blogspot.com/2010/03/megachurch.html

Can God's Word be copied from another man and passed off as his revelation to you? Is this honesty?

Hi Cheat Grace,

Thank you for the comment.

Can you provide the title of the 'Leadership Bible' that you were referring to? There are several version of such Bibles available.

Do also provide the publisher's name and the date of the publishing of the Bible. Thank you.

It could be the Leadership Bible that copied from Kong Hee, unless we can ascertain that the Leadership Bible is published before Kong Hee's own publication.

Hi,

I believe its from:

Leadership Bible (2000)
Sid Buzzell, Kenneth Boa
Kenneth Boa, Bill Perkins; zondervan Publishing Company.

It was copy wrighted in 1998 by Zondervan

Hi Rahula,

That's the version that I think Cheat Grace was probably referring to. But I don't have access to it so I need further confirmation.

Do you happen to have access to a copy? If yes, can you help to verify?

Rahula said...

Hi Sze Zeng,

Yes, that's the one Grace referred to.

Regards,
Rahula

Hi Rahula,

Thank you for verifying! :)

Yes Rahula that is correct. :) Its this one

This article too is copied. http://cheatgrace.blogspot.com/2010/03/cheat-grace-megachurch-pastors-good.html. What he did was take the first two paragraphs from the Bible'a article on Thomas and then write the rest of the article.

The original authors have also printed both Leaderhsip Bible articles in this book. The copy right is still theirs http://www.amazon.com/Handbook-Leadership-kenneth-Boa/dp/1884330061

KH has also printed these two articles in his own book "Renewing your spiritual life in 90 days Vol 1." Besides these two, the cheatgrace pastor has also copied other articles from the internet and other books and placed them on his website under his daily devotion. I will be showing more of such as time goes on

Let me give you some evidence you can check out yourself. See my latest post on a certain plagiarizing megachurch pastor… http://cheatgrace.blogspot.com/2010/03/3rd-example-of-cheatgrace-pastyors.html

Check out this article "The Gift of Encouragement" from the cheatgrace megachurch pastor. The link is here... http://www.konghee.com/www/2010/03/the-gift-of-encouragement/. The article is also found in KH's book "Renewing your spiritual life in 90 days Vol 1" day 89.

This article is copied word for word from Kenneth Boa's article on page 1308 of the Leadership Bible. The expanded version of this article is found in Kenneth Boa's book, The Perfect leader pages 193-195. You can find it in your TTC Library cos I checked out your library catalogue BV 4597.53 .L43 B63

The original article has also been posted on this website... http://bible.org/seriespage/encouragement
and we can see the megachurch pastor's article is a word-for word copy.

So that is already three strikes against the megachurch pastor. Serial copyist?

Not being critical here but just a opposing thought.. if the seminary is so lousy, why was it only discovered 20 years later?
In 1989, how might it be possible for Kong to know what is accreditted and what is not? just to put things in context and give him a benefit of the doubt. We'll leave it to canon james wong to deem it worthy to let him become a pastor or not
